Oh Hai
Hello SydneySyders,
You wanted to know about devMEETs earlier? Well we have delivered!
Lets get out of the city you say. Well we have delivered. So this fine meet we're all off to the Blue Mountains!
Katoomba devMEET!
SydneySyders admin have decided that the best way to enjoy Spring is to escape to the crisp, clean air of the Blue Mountains, hazzah! Our September meet will be an overnight stay at Katoomba. The highlight of the trip is watching:
Sun rise over the Jamison Valley!
Yes, it will be (weather permitting) as spectacular as it sounds! This will be familiar to those who did it last year, but we enjoyed it so much that it was about time to do it again. It's well worth the excruciating 4am start to get out to our secret lookout before the sun starts painting the sky vivid colours before emerging over the horizon and bathing everyone in sweet, sweet warmth.
Trip Details!
What:
- Watch/photograph/paint the Sunday sunrise over the Jamison Valley!
- See the sun disappear from the 3 Sisters lookout
- Side trip to various attractions and entertainment around the Leura and Katoomba.
Who:
Sorry, but this is for those 16 and over only. Those under 18 need consent from their guardians/parental units.
Dates:
The meet will be on the weekend of September Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th.
We will be meeting at Katoomba train station at 12:30pm, although it's ok if you rock up later. If you do you will have to find us however. Call the devMEET phone if that's the case! (0450 517 223)
Transportation:
Train: leaves Central at 10:18, so join us at 10:00 there or hop on along the way. More info at cityrail.info.
Car: if you have access to a vehicle of the wheeled variety then feel free to drive up an meet us there. In fact, we encourage it as the more cars we have, the easier it will be to get everyone out to the secret lookout in the morning! Let us know if you plan to drive
Arrangements:
Accomodation:
Yes this is an overnight meet, horray! But you'll have to organise and book your own accommodation. It's too much logistics for us to organise it for everyone, sorry.
We will be staying at the Katoomba YHA and recommend it for others too. You can stay where you like, but it's also where the transport to the sunrise lookout will be leaving from.
The YHA has a variety of rooms on offer. There are bunk rooms that hold 6 or 8 people. We recommend you get together with a group of friends and book out an entire room! Otherwise you can share with other random, generally friendly people (male only, female only or mixed rooms). These are priced from $25 - $30 per person, depending on the configuration and whether you are a YHA member. They also offer rooms with double beds that go from $75-94 per room. We recommend you get the booking done at least 2 weeks in advance
Maps:
Need a better idea of where everything is going to be? We have conveniently marked everything out in a google map. Just click the little Google Maps image to the left to take you directly to our detailed map.Food (and drink):
Brains... oops, no this is a zombie free event. You'll need to bring food with you or money with which to acquire food. The meals you need to cover are:
Saturday: lunch, afternoon tea and dinner
Sunday: pre-dawn snack + beverage, breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea
The YHA has a kitchen, so feel free to bring or buy ingredients and cook up a storm!
There are plenty of restaurants and fast-food places in Katoomba.
Clothes:
You'll need to bring clothes because public nudity is a crime. The clothes need to cover the gamut of potential weather conditions: the morning could potentially be very cold (Blue Mountains cold, not Sydney cold) so down to -5°C with wind chill factor, or as high as 30°C during the days.
It's highly recommended that you bring:
- Beanie and scarf, or something hooded
- Decent raincoat
- Thick jumper
- Singlet
- Thick, wind resistant long pants (maybe double up)
- Sturdy walking shoes
- Hat
- Sunnies (if you're cool) or Monocle (if you're classy) or Prescription Glasses (if you have been given faulty genetics)
Accessories:
You'll also need:
- A torch
- Water
- Toiletries
- Teddy/Fella Plushies
We all hope you can make this awesome trip!
Disclaimer
We take all care but are not responsible for your actions or the actions of others on the trip.
We reserve the right to refuse anyone to join us for any part of the trip, for any reason, at any time.
Warning: the sunrise leg of this trip can be dangerous because we will be walking through the dark, in the cold, to the top of a high cliff. So, for example, if we don't think you have sufficient clothing to remain warm or footware that isn't suitable then we will not allow you to go.
And if you misbehave we can take you to the police station a few doors down
The devMEET Hotline
For convenience we carry a phone with us to our devMEETs. That way if you get lost OR are running late you will be able to contact us. Call or message us, we don't bite! Much.
